The indigenous music of Iran is termed as Mousiqi Irani. This means Persian music. The oldest form of Ancient Iranian Music is termed as ‘Khonyâ-ye Bâstâni Irâni’. This has formed the base of all Persian compositions. In fact, the Iranians of the ancient civilization had attached immense importance to music and poetry, and this continues to be a part of the great Iranian heritage. Essentially, Iranian Classical Music has been improvised through the ages and is based on modal scales and tunes that have to be memorized.

The Classical music of Persian is basically vocal. In fact, it is the singer who decides the mood of the song being performed. Usually the vocalist is accompanied with a musician either playing a wind or string instrument, as well as one of the percussion instruments. Only rarely is there a complete ensemble of musicians. Till date, Persian songs are considered highly spiritual and meditative. It takes people into deeper levels of meditation and relaxation.
