Growing up with serious anger issues and multiple rage blackouts (chasing sister with an axe anyone? (sorry sis <3)) I realized by the time I hit my first real growth spurt, that something had to be done. Initially I turned to restraint, and worked on locking up my emotions as much as possible. Later on I realized that wasn’t really working and turned to the iron.
What I’ve realized now, many years later is that getting under a heavy bar, is a simple yet very effective guided meditation. Time stands still and the mind clears as you focus your all on lifting the weight. The serenity I felt taught me how to channel my emotions instead of simply locking them up.
Fast forward an additional three or four years and it dawned on me. All this time, I’d thought meditation mean getting in a lotus position (which I’ll never be able to) and humming. Fuck that. Meditation can be practiced anywhere. Meditation SHOULD be practiced anywhere.
Combining meditation allows you to get into a state of complete mental tranquility and focus. From there you can conjure up a thunderstorm of intense rage, a feeling of being one with the surroundings or pretty much anything in between. This is an extremely potent tool for handling adversity in sports be it from opponents, referees or yourself. If you’re not already doing it, you’re missing out. You probably wont be able to levitate the first time you try, but you’ll get there eventually.
This June, I’ll be going away for three days to study meditation. I’m already working on it as much as I can, and I’ve found it makes a huge difference in my training and everyday life. The serenity and level of focus that can be achieved is just amazing, and I’m just scratching the surface.
There are many online meditation guides as well as CDs with guided meditations on them. Though I’ve never really tried any of them, I’d strongly suggest you start out today by finding a guide on Youtube and try it out for about a week. After that, take the time to learn meditation from a real person. Lots of places do meditation classes at a reasonable cost, and you don’t need a ton of teaching. Putting in the time yourself on a daily basis is what really matters.
What’s there to lose?
