Lately I have been exposed to the idea of going through life with absolute certainty or approaching things with doubt already in mind. I had to write an in class essay about this yesterday and my initial way of going about this is that you should have doubt because nothing in life is every guaranteed but was confused about the “absolute certainty” part. You should never be always certain that things will go your way because life isn’t perfect nor are you. Then I continued to give an example of my prior show choir days and the let down of not getting in when entering high school but that is a story for another time. However if by absolute certainty you mean going through life with confidence then I would completely agree. How are you supposed to convince someone you’re right for the job if you aren’t even sure you are right for it yourself? Does that make sense?
As I proceeded through the day and got to my philosophy class, and of course, we ended up talking about the French philosopher Rene Descartes who wrote about how to approach life doubting everything. His thoughts were simply that if you go through life just trusting everything then you wouldn’t learn knowledge (we were discussing the difference between ignorance and knowledge if you must know). And of course I had already written my essay so I couldn’t use this to my advantage. However I agree with Desecrate as much as you can with someone who wrote this back in the 1600’s.
I agree that you should doubt things because I believe that is how you learn things about the world. How would we know that the sky is blue or the world is actually round instead of flat if people didn’t doubt it in the first place? We need people like this to be the scientist and philosophers in the world to help ensure human kind isn’t a goner. In the end he ended up coming out of his (basically just his thought process) even more confused then he began saying he dreaded “awaking from this slumber”, meaning he is going to enter the real world more confused and basically didn’t really get anything out of his meditation.
My question for you is what way of approach do you feel you go through life with? Is there a right or wrong way, or one that is better than the other? Or maybe that there is faults in both methods of approach. Either way leave your questions/ comments/ concerns down below! I would love to hear what you have to say regarding this issue.
