Alternative treatment options may involve other prescription-only medications such as Disulfiram (Antabuse) and Acamprosate. Other methods that do not typically include prescription medication include Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), meditation and peer-support recovery groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, amongst others.

He/she may not feel that TSM is appropriate for you, and may or may not prescribe naltrexone or nalemfene (Selincro). During the various doctor’s appointments that I attended, I was personally never offered the option of medicinal treatment of any kind. When I voluntarily attended a specialist outpatient program, I was prescribed Antabuse with the aim of preventing me continuing my drinking. Sadly, at the end of the course I found myself unable to abstain long-term and relapsed back into heavy drinking.
