People everywhere, from all walks of life, are beginning to become familiar with the word ‘Reiki.’ In part, this is due to public figures like Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Oz and Deepak Chopra who have personally researched and experienced its value and then shared their understanding of Reiki with the public. In fact, Dr. Oz has stated that Reiki is one of the most beneficial treatments one can receive for maintaining balance in life. In our own opinion, this is because receiving a Reiki treatment is like receiving a blood transfusion of life force energy. It can beneficially impact the mental, emotional and physical body.
Brought to the North America by Mrs. Takata, a Japanese immigrant living in Hawaii, Reiki has had its share of misunderstanding. While many people believe Reiki to be a ‘New Age’ healing modality, its greater truth is revealed through inquiry.
A look at the actual definition, translated from Japanese to English, will quickly clear any confusion. The word Reiki simply means “universal life force energy.” The same Kangi in Chinese is translated to “life force from beyond the beyond.” Within both these definitions lies the inference that the life force is spiritually guided. Attesting to that, our experience in working with Reiki for over 20 years has led us down a path of focusing on this spiritual nature and ultimately defining Reiki as the “life force of the universe (or the life force from beyond the beyond) whose nature is light and Love.”
Given these definitions, it is easy to see how vast the energy really is. Is it a healing energy? Yes. We believe that its nature of light and Love is a major factor in its healing ability. Is it a hands-on technique for healing? Only in part. The Japanese spiritualist Makio Usui, who first coined the word ‘Reiki’ for using the life force energy, was guided to use it in the ‘hands-on’ tradition so widely popular today. In other words, the hand positions and treatment protocol that most people are familiar with is one approach to using Reiki. Ultimately, any definition with which we attempt to explain Reiki will fall short of its full potential because definitions, which are simply mental constructs, cannot give you the actual benefit or experience of its unlimited nature.
and have been offering Reiki sessions and teaching The Nature of Reiki courses to students since 1994. Our approach has evolved from the hands-on tradition to the life path that Reiki, as a living energy, has guided us take. As a result, we embrace a broad spectrum of principles which can help one fully open to, and embrace, its nature as a path of inclusion.
Whether you are interested in receiving a one on one Reiki session or decide to take our courses, you can be assured of a unique, expansive and soul nurturing experience.
