Can meditation make me happy? Surprisingly yes, because happiness comes from within and meditation is a way to know your true self.
Meditation is an ancient practice, long associated with inner peace and happiness. Most religions recommend combining meditating with your daily prayers.
Neurologists have used modern imaging tools to find that meditation changes the physical structure of our brains. Why is this important? Because both the endorphins that make us feel so good and the triggers for unpleasant emotions like anxiety originate in specific locations inside our heads.
In a , researchers reported that meditating for just 30 minutes a day for eight weeks created measurable increases in “gray matter” in the parts of the brain related to memory, sense of self and empathy. Even better, there were corresponding decreases in the number of cells in the area that reflexively controls our everyday actions. This is important to happiness because the anxiety and stress we want to reduce are born in the “reptile brain” as an ancient survival mechanism to real or imagined threats.
But can meditation make you happy by changing your brain? Most practitioners do find that meditation makes them feel more in control by improving your memory and learning skills. And virtually all find themselves experiencing and expressing more compassion. It’s as if God designed our brains with a secret “on” switch we can activate by talking to him. Once we do, our compassion for others makes us nicer to be around!
Meditation can reduce or even set you free from the triggers that cause anxiety and stress, especially the free-floating type that fills days and sleepless nights with that vague sense of malaise. Your inner sanctuary awaits any time.
I was born a temperamentally happy person yet meditation has enabled me to quickly process upsets and return to my happy day. This relaxed consciousness has become a blessed sanctuary I look forward to visiting every day. An added bonus is the enhanced creativity and problem-solving skills unleashed during the alpha state.
Practitioners have always known meditation can make you happy. Now modern science has shown us exactly why. I predict in the not-too-distance future, doctors will forgo prescriptions for antidepressants and Xanax and teach meditation instead!
