Balance Emotions and Respond to Stress
A regular meditation practice can help individuals better access their emotions and respond accordingly rather than reacting to them.
Meditation helps with stress because it helps the individual slow down the reactionary stress response. Instead of the “Fight or Flight” stress response which results in increased heart rate, high blood pressure, shallow breathing, and increased adrenaline, meditators develop a greater capacity to recognize their response and help steady their reactions.
Increased Brain Activity
A study found that regular meditation can increase brain activity in relation to controlling emotions. Through brain scans, researchers were able to see how meditation created the ability for participants to pay more attention to their emotions and thoughts, therefore creating the space to eventually control and change them for more favorable responses.
Fight Disease: Deep Relaxation Can Change Our Bodies’ Genes
Meditation changes not only the brain but the body too. A five year Harvard Medical School study found that participants who practiced meditation had “turned on” genes specific to protecting the body from diseases such as chronic pain, high blood pressure, and arthritis.
”After two months, their bodies began to change: the genes that help fight inflammation, kill diseased cells and protect the body from cancer all began to switch on.”
They also found out that the more the participants meditated, the more the active the genes became and kept them free from previous symptoms.
