Human Brain Activity, states of mind, states of consciousness are currently being translated by scientists as brain waves, and they are being understood by a category of frequencies; Gamma, Data, Alpha, Theta and Delta. These frequencies are produced when the physical brain produces waves, made of synchronized electrical pulses when neuron clusters communicate with each other. They are our thoughts made physical. Yup, brain waves are real, and we can tune our own brain to any of the five frequencies we choose.
Why would anyone alter the frequency of their own brain?! The short answer is that there are benefits. At the proper frequency you can make space between your thoughts, making room for clarity, peace, intuition, a stronger sense of awareness and then more consciously taken action. Cultivate another frequency for peak physical performance. Another frequency, produces the perfect climate in the mind for learning and retaining information.
These states of being can be achieved through meditation, yoga, hypnosis or through concentration, or by using binaural beats. They are not dangerous, they are natural functions of our physical body that alter our perception and behavior.
Even if you do not attempt to alter your frequency, it will alter you. The outside world, over which you have no control, will change you. Your brain wave patterns will shift uncontrollably through your day because of outside influence, and because you have not chosen to exert any control over that part of yourself…yet.
From the moment the alarm goes off in the morning it is setting the frequency under which you will operate. You may choose to go with the EH EH EH EH EH EH EH EH EH noise that your alarm factory settings default to, or you might rig your morning alarm to be a peaceful introduction to waking life. It’s your choice. One of them will put you in a state of alert and potentially anxiety, the other will situate you in a frequency of calm awareness.
Sounds Good, Which Frequency Do I Need?
Your options are as follows:
1. Gamma State: (30 — 100Hz) This is the state of hyperactivity and active learning. Gamma state is the most opportune time to retain information. This is why educators often have audiences jumping up and down or dancing around — to increase the likelihood of permanent assimilation of information. If over stimulated, it can lead to anxiety. 2. Beta State: (13 — 30Hz) Where we function for most of the day, Beta State is associated with the alert mind state of the prefrontal cortex. This is a state of the “working” or “thinking mind”: analytical, planning, assessing and categorizing. 3. Alpha State: (9 — 13Hz) Brain waves start to slow down out of thinking mind. We feel more calm, peaceful and grounded. We often find ourselves in an “alpha state” after a yoga class, a walk in the woods, a pleasurable sexual encounter or during any activity that helps relax the body and mind. We are lucid, reflective, have a slightly diffused awareness. The hemispheres of the brain are more balanced(neural integration). 4. Theta State: (4 — 8Hz) We’re able to begin meditation. This is the point where the verbal/thinking mind transitions to the meditative/visual mind. We begin to move from the planning mind to a deeper state of awareness (often felt as drowsy), with stronger intuition, more capacity for wholeness and complicated problem solving. The Theta state is associated with visualization. 5. Delta State: (1—3 Hz) Tibetan monks who have been meditating for decades can reach this in an alert, wakened phase, but most of us reach this final state during deep, dreamless sleep.
You could meditate to achieve a Theta State, or for the purposes of this article today you could explore Binaural Beats. Here’s a quick description of how Binaural Beats can alter the frequency of our brain waves:
If you have an app for tuning your guitar (I do), it asks you to pluck a string until it matches the correct sound. You can tune your guitar differently to make a different sound and play a different song. You can use Binaural Beats to tune your brain waves to the frequency that you desire to operate from.
Youtube has a vast library of free Binaural Beats to listen to. Some of them lain over with positive affirmations and guided meditations.
Here’s one I rather like to listen to while I write:
Spotify has a playlist of Binaural Beats. I’d recommend using the ad free version as I imagine commercials are not designed to assist us in creating our best possible brain function.
