Although contemplative prayer has always been part of Christianity, it has been neglected outside monastic communities in recent centuries. There was a revival movement in the early 1970s which led to contemplative prayer meetings being set up in many churches across the UK. These were known as “Julian Meetings” and had the objective of fostering the teaching and practice of contemplative prayer in the Christian tradition. The “Julian” name was adopted because several founder members came from Norwich and named the movement after Julian of Norwich, a fourteenth century mystic, but the movement is in no way a Julian cult.
The Romsey Julian Group holds meetings at 2:15pm on the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month at the home of one of the members. We start with a brief reading which leads into 25-30 minutes of silent contemplative prayer and finishes with the Grace. This is usually followed by a cup of tea or coffee.
We welcome anyone, from any denomination or background, who has an interest in Christian contemplative prayer. Please contact the Parish Office for further information on the Julian Group. More information about the Julian movement can be found here:
