God created humanity in God’s own image, in the divine image God created them, male and female God created them. Genesis 1:27 (CEB)
In the age of “selfies” it seems that there is less self-understanding. We share pictures of ourselves with friends, family and strangers. We invite people to view our outsides. Rarely is there an invitation to get to know the inside. The technology platform seduces us into thinking that we have intimacy when in fact we are even further apart from one another.
Why is that?
We are afraid. We don’t know who we are ourselves. How can we show others anything more than our “selfies” when we have no idea what we are about?
Fear causes us to hide behind our “selfies,” leading us to think we are “sharing” ourselves with others. But we are only doing so superficially.
So it is the case with God that we do the same. We show God our “selfies” and hope that the Lord doesn’t notice how little we know and share with God about our lives and spirits.
Not that God doesn’t already know. God just wants to make sure we know ourselves as God’s creation.
This Lenten season let us build self-awareness. Let us get to know ourselves. In doing so we let loose of the fear and all that it drags us down to – scapegoating, victim blaming and prejudices.
