HEAVENLY PURSUITS Michelle’s Spiritual Journey: Age 10, Bronx, NY
When the Murphy brains grew up they all wanted to go to Harvard. “What was so great about that?” Annie and I said. It wasn’t even a Catholic school. We, on the other hand, wanted to be saints and Harvard wouldn’t help us toward our heavenly pursuits. We had to start practicing now.
We began by draping our sweaters around our heads, down over our shoulders and then buttoning them under our chins to stay in place. We tried to look like the children of Fatima. Our first task was to write a letter to Stalin in protest of his atrocities. Our second was to picket the Dale movie theater when they played the X-rated film “The Moon is Blue.” Thank God it wasn’t at the R.K.O. where we lived every Saturday afternoon.
After the Saturday matinee we usually played Doris Day, Rock Hudson, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Jeanne Crain or Ann Blythe. We were always in love with the handsomest star except on Saturday mornings when we practiced sainthood.
One Saturday we had a bake sale. Everybody in the building, including the Protestant German lady and the Jewish lady, donated a cake and we sent the money to Bishop Sheehan for Catholic charities. Things were going so well that we decided to move ahead with our saintly projects.
We heard that the family who prays together, stays together. Well this was a hard one for both of us. We used to pray that our Shell Shocked WWII veteran fathers would never come home again. So instead we decided to pray together for world peace: A better idea. Every Wednesday we borrowed a three-part Blessed Virgin from school. We screwed her head to her torso and her torso to her platform, covered a table in the cellar with a new diaper, set her on top, and invited everyone in the building to come and say the rosary. At seven p.m. each week they all arrived, including the German Protestant lady and the Jewish lady and after we prayed we ran around the cellar and played hide-and-seek while all the mothers talked
There was a retarded boy, Giuseppe Ligure, who came every week. He was big, like a man, but his mother never let him out by himself. His one treat was to take the garbage out once a day. His mother would watch him from the window, and she’d yell at him every time he turned his head. All he ever said was, “Your father’s dirty, your father’s dirty, your father’s dirty.” “So’s yours,” we answered, “So’s yours.” “Fuck you, fuck you, fuck you,” he’d yell and we’d all laugh and his mother would scream. Giuseppe never knew the days of the week or the time but every Wednesday starting at seven in the morning he used to sit at the window with his rosary in his hand waiting for his big night out in the cellar.
He was our first miracle. We were well on our way.
