Usually when anyone mentions the word meditation, people tend to think of someone sitting cross legged on a pillow chanting “Om”!
Although chanting can be a beautiful form of your practice, the art of sitting in silence, is the true goal. Many seem to panic when they contemplate taking up meditation. How can I stop my brain from thinking? Do I need a pillow, should I lay down? Deep breathe! How the heck do I do that? 15 minutes! I don’t have 15 minutes!! You CAN do all of the above, AND… you will be forever grateful you did!
To begin with, you need to make time for yourself every day! Putting yourself on your own list of things to do, is a must! Actually, YOU should be first on the list! By taking care of yourself first, you’re better able to give to others.
The single most important aspect of meditation, is your BREATH! By following the in-take and out-take of your breathing, your body naturally begins to slow down. The mind stops racing, the body relaxes, the blood pressure lowers, more oxygen goes into your blood which improves the health of your whole body. The benefits of meditation are endless! To start it may be helpful to silently say the words “in” and “out” along with your breathing to help you focus. If you find your mind wondering, always go back to your breath.
Sitting is the best position for meditation. You can try laying down, however, most people tend to fall asleep. It’s not necessary to sit cross legged either. I usually just pick a comfortable chair, even a kitchen chair will do. It may help to have a pillow behind your back to help keep it straight. You can choose to sit on the floor also. Lay your hands lightly on the tops of your legs, palms up. This shows the Universe you are open to receive the gifts that meditation will bring.
As you follow the motion of your breathing, your journey inward will begin. Your thoughts will slow down as your awareness becomes focused on your breath. It is with your breath that you connect with Spirit, or, the Sacred Self within. This is where the magic starts to happen. This is where you come to know that you are much more than a physical body. You are a glorious being of Light, eternally connected to the Creator and to the entire Universal. ALL is present, in a single breath.
Make meditation a part of your daily routine. All levels of your Being will thank you for it! Your whole life will improve. You have nothing to loose in trying, but, EVERYTHING to gain!
Namaste(the Light in me, bows to the Light in You)!
