Meditation has been one consistent thing in my life for many years. Regardless of whether I meditate daily or infrequently, it’s a practice I can call on to bring myself back to myself. Sometimes it’s difficult to untangle from the daily routines of work, household, kids, school, bills, pets, partners, and other worldly matters. But just being still, present, and letting go of obsessive thoughts can help create a sense of peacefulness, and even joy amidst the chaos.
There are many types of meditation practices and it’s important to find one that works for you. I started formal meditation practice with Zazen practice at in San Francisco in 1974. The book, “Zen Mind, Beginner Mind,” by Shunryu Suzuki, which helped popularize Buddhism in America, was my bible for that time. Throughout the years, I have learned many styles and sat with amazing groups of people to find the meditation that works best for me.
There is no “right” or “wrong” way to meditate, and you don’t necessarily have to sit in yogic positions without moving a muscle. It’s important to make yourself comfortable, perhaps by sitting in a straight back chair. You can also integrate meditation into your daily life: while on a walk, in the bathtub, and even while lying in bed (although this posture may enhance sleep more than it does consciousness!). Try different types of meditation and explore different groups to see what meditation practice works best for you. Do an internet search for meditation instruction, books, and local groups. Sitting in a group practice is very good as it is easier to focus with other like-minded people.
I suggest creating a time and space in your home for meditation. Decorate your meditation area with items that make you feel good, such as an altar with incense, a candle, quiet music, and a statue or photo of a spiritual teacher. You could also use a picture of a person or place in nature that inspires you. Sitting at the same time of the day, even for 10 minutes, is helpful in training the mind to let go. Begin expanding the time and keep this date with yourself as regularly as possible. Soon you will find yourself looking forward to the peace and quieting of the mind.
