When I finally realized that I needed help with my life, I did my research and discovered people before me found substantial relief by meditating. Like many people in the world I had a very specific idea of the ‘type’ of person who meditates. Turns out, ALL types of people meditate! And their is no wrong or right way to meditate. Just as there is great diversity of people, places and ways of thinking in the world, there is diversity in meditation.
Definition of meditate from Webster dictionary- 1. to engage in contemplation or reflection. 2. to engage in mental exercise (as concentration on one’s breathing or repetition of a mantra) for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness.
One of the gifts of meditation is that it allows ones mind to quiet and one to see beyond our limited perspective of the world. It allows one to hear the voice of their ‘true’ self. The part of you that is always at peace.

My first course in meditation was in Mindfulness with Dr Bob Stahl in Mountain View, Ca. It was one of the top most pivotal moments in my healing journey. So of course I have a soft spot for Mindfulness Meditation. What I find most attractive to Mindfulness is that you can incorporate it in all aspects of your life. That any activity can turn into a meditation.
Mindfulness is being present and aware of this exact moment. The NOW. Doing or experiencing whatever is happening right now with acceptance, awareness and with detached observation. You can mindfully do ANYTHING. Breathe. Do the dishes. Take a walk. Brush your teeth. Eat. More on Mindfulness .
Transendental Meditation often fits the mold for what people first think about when they hear the word meditation. In this form of meditation a person sits with back straight and focuses on a ‘specific for you’ mantra or sound to quiet the mind.
Guided Visualizations is a meditation where one focuses on a image or listens to a description of something (external or internal, real or imagined).
Heart Based Meditations focuses on the breath and the rhythms of the heart, focuses moving your heart energy to other places of your physical and spiritual body.
Binaural Beats is more of a tool for, rather than a type of meditation. This technique uses specific music or sounds to slow down brain waves to assist in meditation.
