I will never forget my experience in the pipe ceremony yesterday with Celinda and the class. I think it is amazing that, after only four days of studying indigenous traditions together, I can safely say that our entire group has a bond of friendship beyond words. This communal unity will surely become even stronger during our trip to South Dakota.
In addition, hearing about Celinda’s life story, personal struggles, and search for religion opened my eyes to a new realm of spiritual strength. I think Celinda is living proof of the harmonious energy of Lakota philosophy. Despite her grim childhood experiences and battles with cancer, she evokes the strongest sense of openness, gratitude, and love I have ever seen in a person. In short, she is a beacon of positivity.
Celinda exemplifies the metaphysical effects of Lakota spirituality. Before the ceremony, she said that her openness to indigenous philosophy and serious participation in the rituals have healed her ailments in ways far beyond scientific explanation. I hope that, as a class, we can approach our trip with this same mentality, and that each person experiences a spiritual cleansing in some kind of way. Personally, I hope that, with the support of my new friends and their presences, I continue making progress in disciplining my mind and recognizing the true importances in life.
In the post below, Adele beautifully explains the power of focus. Let’s incorporate this meditative state of mind into our trip.
