Meditation instructor, Joel Ottenbreit has been meditating for more than 40 years. He has practiced Trancendental Meditation, Zen Meditation, Primordial Sound Meditation, and Vipassana Meditation. He has practiced at the Ann Arbor Zen Temple, meditated at temples in Japan, and taken teacher training at the Center for Meditation Science. He is also a long time practitioner of yoga.
Joel’s strategies to teach meditation are unique and effective based on his background knowledge and experiences as an educator at the elementary, secondary and university levels for 40 years. Joel embraces discovery learning as an alternative method to teach the practice of meditation. Most meditation training is steeped in historical practice that has not been updated in hundreds of years. A lot of the teaching is culturally or religiously based and may not connect with Western thinking. Modern teaching techniques have found new ways to make learning more effective. Joel also embraces technology, unlike most traditional meditation teachers and encourages the use of technology in meditation for those that find it to be helpful. Just as education has found the benefits of discovery learning, Joel teaches the benefits of Discovery Meditation.
