Trance has always been a touchy subject even for the followers of Guardian god worship. The lack of knowledge and myths surrounding it has led to many false assumptions among many devotees. This is a sad state of affairs because trance truly is the most ancient spiritual practice among all traditions in the world.
The history of trance is not only found in ancient india but all over the world. In ancient india, before there was even written language, many thousands of years ago, before you found the written versions of the ramayana and mahabharata ,when people used to live in small villages, trance existed. It existed from a guru to shisya tradition which was an oral tradition before written language was invented.
In those days, before we had the knowledge to craft statues from stones and other materials, we prayed to these guardian gods as rock and stone figures, as muniyandi, as karuppans as aathas. How did we know about them? We could not have read about them as there was no written language. The only way would have been them coming down in trance and also if they once lived amongst us.Both are correct.
This phenomenon was not just in india alone.
In the lands of america before white Caucasians took over the land , Red Indians, the natives of the land, ruled for thousands of years.
In those tribal days, each tribe had a shaman, a wise elder of the villages who consulted with their ancestor spirits and animal brothers through trance and helped the people.
Even in the malayan peninsula, which includes current day malaysia and singapore, before islam was brought to the lands, the ancient malays had their own religion, they had trances and mediums.
That ancient practice can still be seen by the practice of Kuda Kepang and praying to their warrior spirits like Datuk Panglima.
So it can be clearly seen that even before the arrival of organised religion, man’s spirituality in the form or Arul Vaaku and Trance has existed for thousands and thousands of years , all over the world, in almost every corner of the world.
Arul Vaaku is real. Trance is real. It is a gift from the divine for us to communicate straight with them without a middle man (like priests and pastors)
So what is the problem in this current world?
Humans can be insecure creatures. We are afraid of things we do not understand. And we try to push them aside. People in power have also abused organised religion to make arul vaaku and trance seem bad. Why wouldn’t they? Who would want to go to a church or temple on a sunday to hear about god when they can go to a place where there is authentic trance and be with god?
Every religion states that we are made in the likeness of god , we have the divine spark within us, we all have god in us.But isn’t it funny how humans in their insecurity have forgotten that.
A man digs into the earth, takes a rock from it, using his creative mind sculpts an image of god from it and puts it in a place of worship.Everybody worships the stone faithfully as god. But if the same man was to have trance ,there will be people with doubts. They believe that a stone is capable of being divine but the man who created it is not? Doesn’t really make any sense does it.
Of course we can all agree that there are people who have abused this power. People who have used it unethically to make money , people who have pretended to have something they are not etc etc, but is that really a reason to throw away this beautiful source of knowledge and help that god in his infinite wisdom has given us?
We have seen police officers being punished for corruption, but does the mistakes of one destroy all the good that thousands of policemen do every single day, protecting our life by putting their own life in danger? How would our society function for even a single day without police officers?
I have personally seen many miracles from my very own eyes through arul vaaku (trance). People in coma saved.Barren mothers having children. Court cases closed with lawyers withdrawing the case. And i personally know and belief in the power of Arul Vaaku.
There are also many myths and superstitions surrounding the concept of arul vaaku (trance). Many people just do not know what happens during an arul vaaku (trance) . There are many different levels of trance as well.
You will have to bear a certain portion of the karma from the devotees who come to seek your help.Imagine if you helped 10 families in a year and you have to take a portion of their karma.Think about how your life can be affected.
You will be tempted constantly by other powers, who would seek to divert you from this path. And if you divert even a little, every good that you did for years will be forgotten by even the very people you risked your own well being for.
Raavanan was originally a staunch devotee of shiva and was the very example of devotion and bhakti. But all people remember of him now is his fall from grace. So is it worth it ? That is for you to decide. But remember, people might forget the good you do, but god does not. Raavanan at his death was granted Moksha by the lord, a gift that isn’t even within the reaches of Lord indra and his Devas who are still under the hold of karma’s law.
With this article i hope to reach out to the people, so they get a better understanding of the beautiful tradition of trance and arul vaaku and better appreciate the gift that God has given us through it. This could be your starting point for something meaningful in your own life, or to understand something that you had questions about.
In the second part of this article,i will go into more details on what happens during a trance, what rituals like (singing and instruments) play during a trance, why giving a minimum dhakshana (a token for help received) is essential and other inside details.
