Movement classes involve creative expression. Authentic movement is moving your body in conscious connection with your thoughts and feelings, while cultivating full acceptance of your abilities, limitations, and physical shape.
Each class is comprised of gentle stretching and guided visualization to relax all areas of the body, followed by a series of loosely structured exercises set to music. For example, we may explore the difference between fluid and rigid movements. As you move, I will suggest exploring related feelings and thoughts, using the exercise as a moving metaphor for relevant experiences in day to day life. You are always welcome to share your experiences with me after class. I believe that processing is important because you may have a profound experience during a movement session, tapping into previously unknown insights or emotions.
I offer the following two Expressive Movement classes:
The positive implications of practicing stress management and having a healthy body image and self-esteem are far reaching. These may include good peer relationships, improved concentration in school, less disruptive behavior in the classroom, and the ability to soothe emotions such as anxiety, worry and anger. This class provides girls with an experience that counters the many unhealthy messages they receive in the media regarding body image and beauty.
