“What a special place The Abbey is. Please pass on my thanks to the team for holding this much-needed safe space for us weary pilgrims. After only a couple of days I find myself missing the food, the stillness and the gentle community.” — Cathy, retreatant
We offer 3 retreat days per month during which we aim to provide a suitable environment for those seeking quiet and contemplation, self-renewal and relaxation.
2016 Retreat dates are:
12th – 14th January 16th – 18th February In March we have our 4 day Spring Retreat running (24th – 27th March) – please see the events list. 12th – 14th April 17th – 19th May 14th – 16th June 12th – 14th July 16th – 18th August 20th – 22nd September 18th – 20th October 15th – 17th November 6th – 8th December
During these days, the resident community hold silent meditation practice for half an hour, three times a day, which you are welcome to join. Three meals a day will be provided: you may eat with the other retreatants and residents or retire to your private room. The rest of each day will be largely yours, although we do ask that you assist with a few of the daily requirements of living and working in community such as helping do the washing up after meals… nothing too strenuous or time-consuming and all part of living at the Abbey on retreat! If you want to include some gentle gardening or other activity as part of your retreat time we can arrange that too.
Retreats run from lunchtime Tuesday to lunchtime Thursday. You are welcome to arrive any time from 10am on the Tuesday morning. We hold silence in the house on the Wednesday from the midday meditation until after the evening meditation. Lunch is therefore silent that day.
The Meditation Room is available at all times for quiet reflection. Spiritual direction is available on request.
While you are on the retreat we are also able to offer Swedish massage, reflexology, or cranio-sacral therapy, at a special rate of £30 an hour. Appointments are usually an hour long, but can also be a half hour taster (to enable you to try out a treatment for example). As treatments are offered on a first come basis, they must be booked in advance. Treatments take place on the Tuesday afternoon.
