Our minds work on two levels – the conscious and the unconscious. We make decisions, think, and act with our conscious mind. The unconscious mind stores and controls our habits and behaviours.
The conscious mind is just the tip of the iceberg – what lies beneath the surface is your subconscious mind which is responsible for 90% of your thinking, reactions, behaviours, feelings and beliefs.
The deep relaxation and focusing process of hypnosis works to calm and subdue the conscious mind so that it takes a less active role in your thinking process. In this state, you’re still aware of what’s going on, but your conscious mind takes a backseat to your subconscious or deeper mind.
Effectively, this allows you and the Hypnotherapist to work directly with the subconscious to make the changes you are seeking.
What does Hypnosis feel like?
Hypnosis is like going into a light trance, alpha brainwave or a deeply relaxed state. We use this commonly occurring and natural state of mind, unknowingly, all the time. It is just natural for us. For example, if you have ever watched a television program or a movie and become really absorbed in the program, or where daydreaming out a window, you were probably in a light trance. This trance is what caused you to not hear someone talking to you or calling your name.
Another example is when you are driving down the road and the next thing you know, you have passed arrived safely at your destination and wonder where did the time go or how did I get here?
Do expect to feel relaxed. A light trance (hypnotic state) feels similar to deep relaxation or meditation.
Hypnosis does not mean you fall asleep, become unconscious, or unaware. In fact, your senses become more heightened than usual. You remain awake in this pleasant relaxing light trance, and often hear or remember everything that’s said to you. It’s not about having someone “program” you to follow their instructions, you are participating all the way by following along with your mind with what the Hypnotherapist is saying.
