I’ve recently been getting back into meditation. I consider myself a meditation newbie. My usual meditation time is around 5-10 minutes before I get antsy. It sometimes feels difficult to spend 10 minutes doing “nothing” (especially when you have clutter you could be clearing, laundry to be folding, tv to be watching…) But meditation brings so many benefits to my life that I think it is totally worth the time. I’m sharing with you today the reasons why I meditate, and maybe this will inspire you to try it too!
Meditation helps to calm my mind After a day of stress, meditation really helps me wind down at night. I am able to calm my mind and find peace. This helps me get into bed without a thousand things running through my mind. (My of writing things down on my to-do list helps too!) Meditation helps me develop better posture I meditate with my eyes closed. When my eyes are closed, I can focus entirely on my body. I am more aware of how my spine is arched, how my neck is tilted and how my shoulders are slouched. This recognition helps me sit up straighter while I’m meditating, and has translated into better posture due to increased awareness. Also, if I don’t sit properly, my body will start aching and I will know I need to correct my posture haha. Meditation relaxes my body It’s the same concept as above. Because I can focus entirely on how my body feels, I start noticing areas of tensions that I previously hadn’t noticed before. I can focus on those areas and relax them. As a result, whenI open my eyes, both my mind and body feel more at peace, and I feel much lighter afterwards. How do I relax areas of tension in my body? I imagine a knot in the area of tension. When I breath in, the knot becomes visualized. When I breathe out, I smooth out the knot. I repeat this until the area feels relaxed. Another method is to just start from the top of your body and systematically go through each body part, intentionally relaxing each part (such as with the knot method described above). This will ensure that all areas of your body will receive care. Another visualization trick I use is to imagine sand and water. I will imagine my area of tension is like sand that’s all wrinkled. When I breath out, I imagine water flowing over it and smoothing everything out.
While meditation doesn’t necessarily produce a tangible end result, I think these improvements to my physical and mental well-being are well worth it. And best of all, it only takes 10 minutes! Do you meditate? What are some benefits you’ve found from meditating?
