Hematite is not a crystal. It is a mineral (iron oxide). Hematite is harder than pure iron. It comes in a variety of colors including black, steel, silver gray, brown, reddish brown and red. Look for a rust colored red streak. This is a common characteristic.
When you hold Hematite in your hand, you can feel it has a strong grounding energy. It strengthens our connection with the earth. It amps our sense of resiliency and survival. If you want to see how tough this mineral is, try and break a piece. It will provide you with proof of its transferable properties like courage, endurance, willpower and vitality. If you are able to crack it open, it will bleed and form stains that appear like blood.
Hematite is best known to help with blood disorders because it is believed to stimulate the absorption of iron and formation of red blood cells. This stone was used in ancient Egypt to stop blood flow and remove poisons from the body. Today, its healing properties have been used to treat issues such as: cuts and wounds, blood pressure regulation, anemia, nervous system dysfunctions, stress, anxiety, insomnia, spinal alignment, broken bones, fevers, headaches, supporting kidney function, and cramps.
It supports our self-esteem and boosts our confidence. Hematite’s qualities make us feel safe and secure. Who doesn’t want that? It is a stone of protection.
Hematite encourages the qualities of our yin-yang energies to balance the meridians within the body. It provides the ability to imbue equilibrium between the ethereal and the physical, hence bringing balance to the mind, body and spirit.
Hematite is the perfect stone to help you regroup intrapersonal forces after a procedure requiring anesthesia. Use it to restore harmony while you recuperate.
Most people seem to have the assumption that all Hematite is magnetic. This is not the case. There is a difference between magnetic and non-magnetic Hematite. Normally there is the slightest trace of magnetic charge found within natural Hematite, if at all. There is actually a mechanical process that is applied by manufacturers that results in Hematite being magnetized. The procedure includes heating and cooling the Hematite while it is attached to a heavy duty magnet.
Either way, magnetized or not, one can expect to receive benefits. I am a fan of wearing a Hematite bracelet. In doing so, we take with us a constant reminder that we are all beings connected to the earth through the root chakra.
If you choose to carry a Hematite stone in your pocket, you may be surprised by the weight. For its compact size, it is quite heavy. This is why I prefer to wear a Hematite bracelet.

Hematite is associated with the root chakra for balance and activation. We must maintain a healthy root chakra because that determines how grounded we are. It is our connection to mother earth and all of nature. It is the core of our life energy. When the root chakra is imbalanced one shows traits such as self-centered behavior and a lack of control.
It should be mentioned that when working with, wearing or placing Hematite under your pillow or around your home, one should be aware that Hematite creates a protective environment. It is like a reflective shield around the person. Many who are experienced meditators are drawn to use this stone because the shield enables reflecting negative energies, thoughts and feelings back to their source. This demands caution. You should understand that if you are the source of negative thoughts, they will reflect back to you.
As an iron based stone, it is best to avoid contact with water. I suggest placing your Hematite on top of a quartz crystal or slab of Selenite. But then again, if your Hematite speaks to you demanding a bath, by all means, oblige it.
