Our first Beginners’ Meditation Course started in 2010, primarily as an outreach to people of all beliefs, unchurched, dechurched and Christian members of the local community. We have now run seven, 7-week Beginners’ Courses with around 10 participants in each.
Some people are drawn to Meditation for its proven health benefits but many find that after experiencing it for themselves it’s the spiritual connection that changes their lives.
Various techniques and exercises are shown and practiced to enable people to experience the silence and increase health and well-being in their lives. One session is solely dedicated to Christian Meditation, as taught by The World Community for Christian Meditation. Those drawn to this are encouraged to attend WCCM groups and Community days. Some people who do the Beginners’ Course have then gone on to join Bev Armstrong’s Christian Meditation Groups.
In 2013 we had one Beginners’ Course, with regular attendances by all partipants and positive feedback. We have been able to support one of the participants through prayer and book-lending and another has donated clothes and furniture to the Monthly Market and Aboriginal Communities. None of these participants has joined the On-going Group.
The regular On-going Group, consisting of Christians, and some who want nothing to do with organised religion, runs on Thursday nights for those who want to continue with group meditation. It currently has up to eleven attendees but not everyone attends each week.
A ten minute talk, taken from one of the Spiritual Leaders, is given, then a relaxation and a 25 minute silent meditation, followed by supper for those who wish to stay and chat.
I draw on the Christian Meditation Community for a lot of the resources for the teaching used in the Ongoing Group.
The Group has developed into a caring, supportive Community and questions are encouraged-prompting research to provide the right answers!
We’ve provided prayerful support and book-lending to individuals in the group and furniture and clothing has been donated to the Monthly Market and Aboriginal Communities from participants. One non-parishioner is on the Magdalene Roster and another has joined the 2014 roster.
