Meditation Offerings
Meditation has always been a vital part of the yoga tradition. We embrace the introspective and contemplative aspects of yoga practice, and aim to be a resource for those who want to explore meditation. There are many different approaches to meditation, all of which can be valuable to different people, or to the same people in different moments of their lives. Within the yogic tradition there are methods of concentration, visualization, chanting, and meditating on the breath. Buddhist meditation lineages also include a wide range of techniques, emphasizing mindfulness, and often heart qualities like compassion and goodwill (metta). We at Spiral Path Yoga Center are most influenced by Mindfulness Meditation (Insight Meditation, also known as Vipassana), but some teachers may also incorporate their knowledge and experience of other methods from yogic, Taoist, or other contemplative traditions. Join us for a meditation session! There will be time for sitting, sharing, and listening to recorded dharma talks. The intention ofthis practice is to create a fluid integration between these forms, as they are all used as means to cultivate mindfulness. The class includes 15-25 minutes of sitting or walking meditation every week. Yin Yoga & Meditation – Fridays 6:00-7:30pm with Addie – regular class passes/prices Yin Yoga is a unique combination of yoga asana, Taoist energy practices, and Mindfulness Meditation. Concentration, mindfulness, and receptivity are cultivated in the poses, making Yin Yoga a wonderful introduction to meditation. Each week, the class ends with 10-15 minutes of seated meditation before the final relaxation (savasana). Why are you so afraid of silence? Silence is the root of everything. If you spiral into its void, a hundred voices will thunder messages you long to hear. Rumi You do not have to adopt a different set of beliefs to practice meditation. While we may introduce you to philosophies and wisdom teachings that relate to different meditation techniques, we strive to present thesepractices in ways that are accessible to students who practice any faith or philosophy. It is always up to you to try these techniques and ideas for yourself and to see what’s useful. You don’t have to be able to sit on the floor in Lotus Pose to meditate. We have a variety of props and cushions to make sitting comfortable and sustainable. Chairs are also available, and we encourage you to use them for meditation if it would help you sit with ease. Don’t be intimidated to try meditation. You don’t need to be calm or thought-free. Your mind may wander many times during one sitting session, but each time you notice…that’s a moment of mindfulness!
