As a species we are distinct from other species because of our ability to think – but, we began to evolve as a species, when individuals started to meditate: genius is a result of meditation. So now, what is meditation? The best, most neutral, universal(taking it out of any particular arcane , spiritual or mystical context) and concise defintion is given by Patanjali: “when the attention of the mind is directed in a single stream to a chosen field, without dissipation and distraction; when the cognition is thus concentrated, and sustained – this is meditation.” Through that defintion it is clear that none of us are strangers to meditation, because most of us have, or have had, ‘a chosen field’ of interest, and – don’t we spontaneously lose ourselves in our interest: our attention captivated, concentrated and sustained in that ‘chosen field’, spontaneously? In this simple way I shall explore and and illuminate meditation – my ‘chosen field’, mind itself: it could have been music, asport, or chess – but, it is practising meditation on mind, that is our field of interest here; and just like in those other fields – the whole venture is kicked off by spontaneous interest. That you are reading this means you have some interest in meditation – may it grow as you sustain it !
