My clean simplistic objects design an environment on the wall with formal, spacial relationships reflecting those in the built landscape. My built shapes want to fit together and almost do, inviting the viewer to either find a way to resolve the puzzle in their mind or accept that it is a puzzle which does not need solving. It brings up ideas of human relationships – connectedness, disconnectedness, and the interaction of personalities and how they reflect each other. Arrangement of the objects with more or less space contained in between creates a tension at times and a loving embrace at others, making the examiner of the objects feel comfort and ease or discomfort and claustrophobia.
I am very interested in the perceived space between the objects, the sounds, and the reflections, or reverberations of both. These built objects are painted in a neutral color on the visible surfaces and with an intense color on the non-visible surfaces. Rather than being directly seen this intense color bounces off the gallery wall and is felt as an aura, a glow, or a reflected emotion. Sound is also incorporated into these arrangements. While invisible to most of us, both color and sound radiate energy and may be used to overcome physical and emotional obstacles. The sound acts as meditation, opening the mindʼs space to make room for intimate exploration of the individual pieces or the grouping as a whole. I often use a male and female voice to reinforce ideas of relationships, and to create a harmonized call and response.
